Groton PPI Use and Hip Fracture Risk
Hip fracture and GERD. We often comment that everything in the body is connected. Here is another example. GERD or reflux symptoms drive sufferers to seek relief. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) come to the rescue for many Groton reflux sufferers. Unfortunately, these PPIs may trigger issues elsewhere, especially the hip for which the risk of fracture is higher, even though they help with GERD. Your Groton chiropractor closely monitors our patients who report hip pain, especially if they are using PPIs, as many time chiropractic treatment does alleviate hip pain.
PPIs, GERD, and HIP FRACTURE RISK
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly recommended and used for GERD and peptic ulcer management. The risk of hip fracture is elevated in PPI users. Whether users utilize a low or medium dose, the risk of hip fracture is higher while those taking a high dose were at even higher risk for hip fracture. Researchers caution that doctors and patients must know this in order to be cautious in prescribing PPI use for a long period of time and be cautious in knowing what the appropriate use of PPIs is so that they don’t take it without a full understanding of the need for such use. (1) Researchers in the latest study of the effect of proton pump inhibitor use on hip fracture risk minced no words: PPI use is associated with hip fracture development. They begin their study by acknowledging that the effect of PPI use on the risk of hip fracture is controversial which inspired them to study if this were true. They recruited participants who were over age 40 and had been prescribed PPIs for a minimum of 90 days. They then checked on any hospitalizations in these patients for hip fracture. They found that fractures developed more often in PPI users than in non-users and that fracture risk linked to PPI use increased the more time they were on them. (2) Averting hip pain is certainly preferable, and chiropractic treatment may be gentle and relieving for many.
