Groton Strong Bones, Fewer Falls Vitamin D Plays a Bigger Role Than You Think
VITAMIN D IS GOOD FOR US ALL, ESPECIALLY US OLDER FOLKS!
If vitamin D has come up at your chiropractic appointments recently, you're not alone — and there's solid science behind why it keeps entering the conversation. This sunshine vitamin is quietly doing important work in our bodies — and two newly published research papers remind us just how much it counts, especially as we get older. At Shoreline Medical Services/ Hutter Chiropractic Office, we love sharing research like this with our patients in Groton — read on to see what the latest science reveals about vitamin D and your health and how adding it to the chiropractic treatment plan may benefit you!
WHAT THE LATEST RESEARCH IS TELLING US
A major systematic review and meta-analysis released in The BMJ: British Medical Journal in May 2026 analyzed 69 clinical trials concerning nearly 154,000 participants to evaluate calcium and vitamin D supplementation for fracture and fall prevention. Researchers found that calcium and vitamin D used in combination was linked to a somewhat reduced fracture risk — a meaningful finding for anyone who has watched a parent or grandparent have to recuperate from a fall. No single supplement tells the whole story of good health, but when research at this scale points out a consistent pattern, it's worth paying attention. (1)
The second paper, published in Frontiers in Endocrinology in April 2026, looked even more broadly at what vitamin D does for aging bodies. Vitamin D supplementation, especially combined with physical exercise, is linked with improvements in muscle strength and postural balance in osteoporotic patients, and a decreased risk of falling. That's big! And when it comes to staying upright and independent as we age, strong muscles and steady balance may be the most important protection we have. (2)
MORE THAN JUST BONES — VITAMIN D'S REACH SURPRISES US
What's noticeable is that the research found roughly 6 in 10 older adults are vitamin D-deficient — and the consequences extend well beyond bones, touching muscle health, heart function, brain health, and even how long we live. Simply put, vitamin D is one of those nutrients our whole body needs to function optimally. (2)
