Groton Mediterranean Diet Lowers Risk Of Cognitive Decline, Osteoporosis & Fracture Risk
Thoughts of the Mediterranean bring postcard-worthy images of beautiful blue ocean waters, white sane beaches, cloudless blue skies…and food? Yes, food! Shoreline Medical Services/ Hutter Chiropractic Office shares nutrition tips, and the Mediterranean diet is bantered around the nutrition world for its multiple health advantages as well it should in our chiropractic world, too. Fish, fruits, and veggies are good for all of us in this Groton chiropractic family!
BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET
With the expanding recognition that diet offers a valuable role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being discussed. A new paper with suggestions for guidelines endorsed a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to deliver calcium and protein adequate enough to maintain normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are related to a reduced risk of fracture. (1) In other studies, the Mediterranean diet has been described as reducing hip fracture risk. Another new paper explains that there is evidence that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also reduce hip fracture risk in addition to risk of lumbar spine osteoporosis in women. (2) A study just published this past month showed that older adults who followed the Meditterranean Diet closely had reduced chances of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, reduced osteoporosis odds, reduced probability of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be inspiring to check out and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Shoreline Medical Services/ Hutter Chiropractic Office finds these new studies interesting enough to share with our Groton chiropractic patients and their families.
WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?
Good stuff! Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It suggests staying away from sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not simple!
