EXERCISE PROGRAM FOR LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS TESTED
The aim of this preposed study is to analyze whether the addition of an exercise program to an educational program might enhance walking capacity in those who experience lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication. Being a randomized controlled clinical trial, 60 participants will be randomly divided into either the intervention or control group. The intervention group will get an educational program and an exercise program, while the control group will only receive the educational program. The primary outcome measure is walking capacity, while the secondary outcome measures are pain intensity, disability level, and quality of life. (1) Shoreline Medical Services/ Hutter Chiropractic Office knows our Groton spinal stenosis patients are quite concerned about these outcomes!LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS WITH NEUROGENIC CLAUDICATION
Lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication is a spinal issue that causes narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back region, resulting in pressure on the nerves. This can result in pain, numbness, and weakness in the legs and buttocks. In really bad cases, it can also cause difficulty walking. The condition is most common in people over the age of 50. These are just the folks in Groton who need to keep (or at least start) exercising!
THE EXERCISES
The specific exercises that will be used in this study are made to improve walking capacity by stretching and strengthening the muscles surrounding the spine. The hope is that by performing these exercises on a regular basis, patients will experience less pain and disability and experience an improved quality of life.
THE CONTROL GROUP
The control group in this trial will only receive an educational program about their condition and how to manage it. While education is valuable, it is not usually enough on its own to provide significant relief from symptoms. That is why the addition of an exercise program is so important. It involves the back pain patient in his or her relief! Listen to this PODCAST with Dr. Michael McMurray on The Back Doctors Podcast with Dr. Michael Johnson as he details The Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management for lumbar spinal stenosis.
