Groton Knee Osteoarthritis and Quality of Life with a Mediterranean Diet

What do stiff, popping, cracking knees and olive oil, fruits, veggies and red wine have in common? Knee osteoarthritis! Groton knee pain sufferers know that morning routine with “bad” knees, the stiffness and pain that comes with getting up and moving. Shoreline Medical Services/ Hutter Chiropractic Office hears our Groton chiropractic patients bemoan this all the time. Those Groton knee pain sufferers would be grateful for some relief. What’s one way to get some relief? The Mediterranean diet that involves, of all things, eating. Shoreline Medical Services/ Hutter Chiropractic Office wonders “How bad can eating be for Groton knee pain relief?”

Groton OSTEOARTHRITIS SUFFERERS AND THEIR PAIN

Groton knee osteoarthritis is ordinary. There are many Groton knee pain sufferers. They’re not alone! 240 million people around the globe live with osteoarthritis. That bothers about 10% of men and 18% of women. (1) Any Groton knee osteoarthritis sufferer knows about the knee pain, the morning stiffness, and the creaky joint motion that lessens the quality of daily life. (1) It’s just not much fun. Now a Mediterranean diet could be some fun though!

WHAT TO EAT ON A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

The Mediterranean diet incorporates plenty of fruits and vegetable, legumes and nuts, cereals and seeds, seafood and fish. The Mediterranean diet allows for moderate intake of dairy, poultry and eggs in addition to red wine and olive oil as the key source of dietary lipids. (1) Yum! Consuming a Mediterranean diet can be very tasty as well as exciting for a recent Mediterranean diet enthusiast.

BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Knee osteoarthritis involves inflammation in addition to pain. An analysis of three research reports highlights that biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation due to osteoarthritis fell in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Specifically, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis patients who better followed a Mediterranean diet show a lowered risk of deteriorating knee pain at four years follow up. For those who did not experience knee osteoarthritis at the beginning of the 4 years project and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% lowered risk of getting knee osteoarthritis was found. (3) Overall, a higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet is associated with improved quality of life and less pain, disability and depressive symptoms. (4)
