Groton CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Strengthen the Quadratus Lumborum

The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on both sides of the abdominal wall. It is a deep muscle and typically thought of as a back muscle as it stretches from the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae to the 12th rib. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum produces lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or elevation of the pelvis. (5) Various bridge-type exercises are being examined about the way in which they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s two layers of muscle in order for it to best add to the motor control of the lumbar pain and avert back pain.
