Thoughts
of the Mediterranean bring postcard-worthy images of gorgeous
blue ocean waters, sandy beaches, cloudless blue
skies…and food? Yes, food! Shoreline Medical Services/ Hutter Chiropractic Office shares nutrition tips,
and the Mediterranean diet is bantered around the nutrition world for its multiple health advantages
as well it should in our chiropractic world, too. Fish, fruits, and veggies are
good for all of us in this Groton
chiropractic family!
BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET
With the growing recognition that diet plays
a beneficial role in health and prevention of disease issues
like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being discussed.
A new paper with suggestions for guidelines endorsed
a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to provide
calcium and protein sufficient enough to preserve
normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are linked to a decreased risk of fracture. (1) In other studies,
the Mediterranean diet has been said to reduce hip fracture
risk. Another recent paper explains that there is evidence
that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary
Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also reduce hip
fracture risk as well as risk of lumbar spine
osteoporosis in females. (2) A study just published this
past month pointed out that older adults who adhered
the Meditterranean Diet more strictly had lower odds
of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, reduced
osteoporosis odds, lower risk of
cognitive decline and hip fracture may be motivating to try and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Shoreline Medical Services/ Hutter Chiropractic Office finds these new
studies interesting enough to share with our
Groton chiropractic patients and their families.
WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?
What foods are in the mediterranean diet? Fruits,
vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt,
seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water,
juices. It suggests staying away from sugars,
refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not simple!
